Background of the Study

Proper nutrition during childhood is crucial for optimal growth and development. The first years of a child’s life are particularly important as they lay the foundation for cognitive, emotional, and physical development. Malnutrition, including both undernutrition and overnutrition, can have profound effects on child development, leading to stunted growth, learning difficulties, and increased susceptibility to infections (Adepoju et al., 2024).

In many low-resource settings, including Nigeria, school feeding programs are an important intervention aimed at improving child nutrition and promoting better educational outcomes. Nurses often play a role in supporting the implementation of these programs, particularly in monitoring the nutritional quality of the meals provided and ensuring that children receive proper nutrition to support their development. However, the extent of nurses’ involvement in school feeding programs and its direct impact on child development in the Nigerian context has been insufficiently studied.

This study will assess the role of nurses in school feeding programs at General Hospital, Jalingo, and examine their impact on child development. By evaluating the contributions of nurses in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of school feeding programs, this research aims to identify strategies for improving child nutrition and development through such initiatives.

Statement of the Problem

While school feeding programs are recognized as a strategy to improve child nutrition and development, the role of nurses in these programs has not been well documented. At General Hospital, Jalingo, there is a need to evaluate how nurses contribute to these programs and how their involvement affects child development. This study will fill the gap in literature by examining nurses’ roles in school feeding programs and their impact on child development.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of involvement of nurses in school feeding programs at General Hospital, Jalingo.

2. To evaluate the impact of school feeding programs on child development.

3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in the implementation of school feeding programs.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of nurses’ involvement in school feeding programs at General Hospital, Jalingo?

2. How do school feeding programs impact child development in Jalingo?

3. What challenges do nurses face in the implementation of school feeding programs?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses at General Hospital, Jalingo, play a significant role in the implementation of school feeding programs.

2. School feeding programs have a positive impact on child development in Jalingo.

3. Challenges such as insufficient resources and training hinder the effectiveness of nurses’ roles in school feeding programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses’ involvement in school feeding programs at General Hospital, Jalingo, and assess their impact on child development. Data will be collected using surveys, interviews, and assessments of child growth and development. Limitations may include the difficulty of isolating the specific impact of nurses’ involvement from other factors affecting child development.
